Mental Illness - Seishin Ijyou
〘 noun 〙 A state in which one's mental balance is lost and abnormal aspects are seen in speech and behavior. A state in which one is not capable of taking responsibility for one's actions and is therefore not suited to enjoying freedom of movement. It is used as a social and legal term rather than a medical one. Mental disorder. *Rodandan (1889) by Koda Rohan, 15 "What a strange man. My lord, this man is probably mentally ill ."

〘名〙 精神のバランスがくずれ、言動や行動に異常な面がみられる状態。行動の責任能力を持っていないので、行動の自由を享楽するのに不適な状態。医学的よりも、むしろ社会的・法的術語として用いられる。精神障害。※露団々(1889)〈幸田露伴〉一五「はてな余程変な男だ。御主人此人は多分精神異常(セイシンイジャウ)でせう」
