The greatest philologist of antiquity, born around 217-145 BC. Born on the island of Samothrace, he was a student of Aristophanes of Byzantium. He served as head of the Library of Alexandria and tutor to Ptolemy VII, before moving to Cyprus when Ptolemy VIII ascended to the throne, where he died. He made great contributions to the fields of grammar, etymology, orthography, and textual criticism. He edited the texts of Homer, Hesiod, Archilochus, Alcaeus, Anacreon, and Pindar, and wrote commentaries and critical essays.
