In Sanskrit, it means a male-female pair and their sexual union. There are numerous examples of Mithuna figures throughout the ages of Indian art, and they represent the sensual side of religious art. In early ancient Buddhist sculptures, such as those at Bodhgaya and Sanchi, the male and female figures are simply standing side by side, but in the Gupta period there are sculptures depicting kissing or physical contact, and in Hindu sculptures at Ellora, Khajuraho, Bhubaneswar, and Konark, many depict various sexual positions.
