Yang Wei-zhen (English name)
[Born] Motosada 2 (1296)
[Died] Hongwu 3 (1370)
A Chinese literary figure in the late Yuan and early Ming periods. Born in Shanyin (Zhejiang Province). Style name: Lianfu. Pen names: Tieya and Dongweizi. Passed the Jinshi examination in the 4th year of Taiding (1327). Failing to advance in his career due to rebellion against his superiors, he abandoned his post during the wars at the end of the Yuan period and retired to Songjiang in Jiangnan. In the Ming period, he was invited by Emperor Taizu, but only stayed for 110 days before returning to Songjiang and dying. He lived a life of indulgence in alcohol and sex, and learned his poetry from Li Bai and Li He, specializing in the ornate, symbolic, fantastical and unrestrained Yuefu (music of music). Although it differed from the mainstream of Yuan poetry, he was a leading figure in the poetry society in Jiangnan at the time, and so his style became popular and was called the "Tieya style." His main works include the Dongweizi Collected Works (31 volumes), the Tieya Ancient Music (10 volumes), and the Restoration Poetry (6 volumes).
