American film actress. Born in Chicago. She started out as one of the "sea bathing beauties" in comedies directed by Mack Sennett, but was recognized by director Cecil B. DeMille and starred in sex-themed melodramas such as "Don't Change Your Husband," "A Man and a Woman" (both 1919), and "Anatole" (1921). Her glamor and avant-garde style made her a top actress, and together with her luxurious private life, she took the world by storm. When talkies came around, she lost her former popularity, but she made a comeback in 1950 in Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard," playing the heroine role she played in real life, which caused a stir.
