Born: May 23, 1875 in New Haven, Connecticut
[Died] February 17, 1966. New York, New York. CEO of General Motors (GM), an American automobile manufacturer. Full name Alfred Pritchard Sloan, Jr. Studied electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and became president of a bearing company at the age of 26, building a business supplying bearings to the automobile industry. When the company became a subsidiary of General Motors in 1918, he became vice president of General Motors. When Pierre S. DuPont and others took control of the company, he became president in 1923. He established a modern management system with a decentralized divisional system, and by the end of the 1920s General Motors had surpassed Ford Motor in sales volume, eventually building it into the world's largest company. In 1937, he became chairman of the board of directors. He retired from the front line of management in 1946 and from his position as chairman of the board of directors in 1956, but continued to remain honorary chairman thereafter.

Sloane, Sir Hans

Born: April 16, 1660, Killileigh, Ireland
Died January 11, 1753, London. A very famous British physician and collector who laid the foundations of the British Museum. In addition to collecting rare books, manuscripts, and antiques, he was interested in plants, and in 1687 visited Jamaica, where he collected and catalogued 800 new plant species. In 1727, he became physician to King George II and president of the Royal Society. He bequeathed his vast collection, valued at £50,000 at the time, to the state on the condition that it would purchase it for £20,000, which resulted in the founding of the British Museum in 1759.

Sloan, John French

Born: August 2, 1871 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania
Died: September 7, 1951. Hanover, New Hampshire. American painter, cartoonist, and illustrator. Studied at the Pennsylvania School of Art, moved to New York in 1905, and began painting in earnest from 1907. Founded the realist group "Ashcan School" and depicted life in the slums of New York. Served as president of the Society of Independent Artists, and taught at the Art Students League from 1914 to 1938. Written The Gist of Art.

イギリスの非常に著名だった医師。大英博物館の基礎を築いた収集家。珍しい書籍,写本,骨董品を収集するかたわら,植物に興味を示し,1687年ジャマイカを訪れ,植物の新種 800種を集めてその目録をつくった。 1727年ジョージ2世の侍医,ロイヤル・ソサエティの会長。当時5万ポンドの値がつけられた莫大な収集品を国が2万ポンドで買上げるという条件で国に遺贈し,その結果,59年大英博物館が設立された。

アメリカの画家,漫画家,挿絵画家。ペンシルバニアの美術学校で学び,1905年ニューヨークへ出て,07年以後本格的に絵画制作に取組む。写実主義グループ「アシュカン派」を結成し,ニューヨークのスラム街の生活などを描いた。独立美術家協会の会長をつとめ,14~38年アート・スチューデンツ・リーグで教えた。著書『芸術の要点』 The Gist of Art。
