Full name Alfred Pritchard Sloan, Jr. Studied electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and became president of a bearing company at the age of 26, building a business supplying bearings to the automobile industry. When the company became a subsidiary of General Motors in 1918, he became vice president of General Motors. When Pierre S. DuPont and others took control of the company, he became president in 1923. He established a modern management system with a decentralized divisional system, and by the end of the 1920s General Motors had surpassed Ford Motor in sales volume, eventually building it into the world's largest company. In 1937, he became chairman of the board of directors.
