A village in Kitakoma County in northwest Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 4,684 (1995). Occupies the western foot of Mt. Kayagatake. With the completion of the Asaho Weir in the mid-Edo period, the foothills were opened up and rice was the main agricultural production area. In recent years, vegetable cultivation such as tomatoes and lettuce has become popular, and efforts are also being made in fruit cultivation and livestock farming. Asao radishes, a local specialty, are shipped to a wide range of markets. Located close to the Sudama Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, there are high hopes for the village to develop into a suburban agricultural area. Traditional folk events are still held throughout the village, and the Yashiro family residence, a private house from the Edo period, has been designated an Important Cultural Property.
