A fairly large arboreal squirrel most commonly found in Canada, the eastern United States, and the UK. A mammal of the rodent family Sciuridae. Also called the eastern gray squirrel. Native to North America, the UK ones were artificially introduced and have become wild. They have also become wild in South Africa, New Zealand, and other places. As the name suggests, they have a grey body and a long tail with an abundance of bushy long hair. In summer, the sides and legs are chestnut brown. Body length 23-30 cm, tail length 20-24 cm, weight 350-700 g.

カナダ，アメリカ東部，イギリスなどでもっともふつうに見られるやや大型の樹上生のリス。齧歯（げつし）目リス科の哺乳類。トウブハイイロリスともいう。原産地は北アメリカで，イギリスのものは人為的に移入され，野生化したもの。他に，南アフリカ，ニュージーランドなどでも野生化している。名のように灰色の体に，ふさふさした長毛を豊かに生やした長い尾をもつ。夏毛では体側と四肢が栗色。体長23～30cm，尾長20～24cm，体重350～700g。
