Zrenjanin (English spelling)

Japanese: ズレニャニン - ずれにゃにん（英語表記）Zrenjanin

The capital of the Banat region of Vojvodina in northern Yugoslavia. Population 81,000 (1991). Formerly called Veriki Bečkerek, Petrovgrad since 1934, it was named after the local "people's hero," Jarko Zrenjanin (1902-42) after World War II. A strategic transportation hub on the Begej River. It was recognized as a city as early as the 15th century, but was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and Austria from the mid-16th century until World War I.

ユーゴスラビア北部，ボイボディナ自治州バナト地方の中心都市。人口8万1000(1991)。以前はベリキ･ベチュケレクVeriki Bečkerek,1934年以降ペトロフグラードPetrovgrad，第2次大戦後，当地の〈人民英雄〉ジャルコ･ズレニャニン(1902‐42)にちなんで現在名となった。ベゲイ川に臨む交通の要衝。すでに15世紀には都市としてみとめられるが，16世紀中葉から第1次世界大戦まではオスマン帝国，オーストリアの支配をうける。
