A city in central Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central part is the Kitakami Basin, and the city developed on the right bank of the Kitakami River. The Tohoku Main Line, Tohoku Shinkansen, and Tohoku Expressway pass through the city, the Kamaishi Line branches off from the city, and Hanamaki Airport is located there. Before it was developed, it was a horse-breeding area known as Hana no Maki, and in the Edo period it was a small castle town for the Nanbu clan and a post station on the Oshu Kaido road. Rice is the main crop, and highly productive agriculture such as vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers is practiced. In the industrial sector, large industrial complexes have been developed, and factories for electrical machinery, precision machinery, and more are located there. Located at the foot of the mountains in the west, it has developed as a hot spring tourist city with Hanamaki Onsenkyo close by. Tase Dam is located in the southeast. It is the birthplace of Miyazawa Kenji and the place where Takamura Kotaro spent his later years, so there are many historical sites related to him. The local performing art of the deer dance is famous. In January 2006, Ishidoriya-cho, Osako-cho, and Towa-cho, Waga-cho were incorporated into the city. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 908.39 ^km2 . Population: 101,438 (2010).

岩手県中部の市。1954年市制。中部は北上盆地で北上川右岸に市街が発達，東北本線，東北新幹線，東北自動車道が通じ，釜石線が分岐するほか，花巻空港がある。開田の以前は花の牧といわれた馬産地で，江戸時代は南部氏の小城下町，奥州街道の宿駅であった。米作を主とし，野菜，果樹，花卉(かき)など生産性の高い農業が行われる。工業では大規模な工業団地が造成され，電気機械，精密機械などの工場が立地している。西部山麓に花巻温泉郷をひかえ温泉観光都市として発展。南東部に田瀬ダムがある。宮沢賢治の生地であり，高村光太郎の晩年の地でもあって，ゆかりの史跡が多い。郷土芸能鹿(しし)踊は有名。2006年１月稗貫郡石鳥谷町，大迫町，和賀郡東和町を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。908.39km²。10万1438人（2010）。
