…George Newnes, the British founder of “Tit-Bits” in 1881, used its success to make publishing a profitable business by publishing a number of popular magazines. “The Strand,” in which Arthur Conan Doyle serialized his Sherlock Holmes detective stories, was one of Newnes’s magazines. Alfred Harmsworth (later Lord Northcliffe), who became a British newspaper magnate from the late 19th century to the 20th century, was also a contributor to “Tit-Bits.” …
