An industrial city in the southeastern part of the Moravia region of the Czech Republic. Population 81,459 (2001). From 1949 to 1990, it was called Gottwaldov, after the former president of Czechoslovakia. It is known for a shoe factory established in 1894 by Tomáš Bat'a (1876-1932). During the interwar period, Bat'a introduced mass production methods using unskilled labor, modeled on the United States, and provided his employees with modern housing for workers. It is still the world's largest shoe manufacturer. Industries of rubber, precision machinery, leather, and plastics are thriving. There is a museum on the history of shoe production. An international children's film festival is also held every May. [Mizuho Nakata] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
