?-1706 A fugitive slave from Bali, Indonesia, and leader of a rebellion against the Dutch East India Company. He first served in the Dutch army in Batavia (now Jakarta), but fled due to discrimination and became the leader of several hundred fellow fugitive slaves. They became bandits in the Priangan region of West Java, and were pursued by the company's punitive forces into Central Java. The Mataram Muslim king Amangkulat II initially protected him, but then shunned him due to growing tensions with the Dutch. Surapati then fled to East Java, where he founded the independent state of Pasuruan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
