In South America, this term refers to a "freezing plant." The word's origin comes from the first refrigerated ship, "Le Frigorifique," that arrived in Argentina. In the 19th century, meat trade, with the main export market being Europe, was a major factor in the 19th century meat trade. In the Southern Hemisphere, exporters of livestock products had to cross the equator, and before refrigerated ships were put to practical use, they exported meat as dried or salted meat. Refrigerated ships were invented in France in the 1870s and put to practical use in the UK in 1880. In Argentina, the first frozen meat plant was built in 1882, and after that, local companies, as well as British and American capital, entered the freezing industry, which led to a rapid increase in frozen meat exports from the end of the 19th century onwards and was a major factor supporting the development of the livestock industry.
