A port town at the mouth of the Jōganji River in Shinkawa County, Etchu Province (Toyama Prefecture). Mizuhashi Station appears in the Engishiki, and it has long been a key crossing point on the Hokuriku Road. In the late Middle Ages, Mizuhashi followers of the Ikko sect are known to have been active there. In the Edo period, the town was divided into Higashi Mizuhashi and Nishi Mizuhashi by the Jōganji River (now the Shiroiwa River), and the 1646 (Shohō 3) tax register lists Uragata Higashi Mizuhashi and Uragata Nishi Mizuhashi. The 1656 (Meireki 2) and 1670 (Kanbun 10) village seals list both as Mizuhashiura, but the village officials were different. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
