It is a type of puppet theater and kabuki kyogen based on sumo wrestlers. It was advantageous for the entertainment industry in the Edo period to have popular actors play the roles based on the sumo world and sumo wrestlers, which occupied a large part of entertainment life in the Edo period, and many sumo kyogen plays were produced. In joruri, Mukashi Gome Mankoku Dooshi (written by Nishizawa Ippū and Tanaka Senryū), which premiered at the Toyotakeza Theater in Osaka in January 1725 (Kyoho 10), is well known, and other works based on this include Futatsu Chocho Kuruwa Nikki (Diary of Two Butterflies' Quarters) (July 1749, Takemotoza, Osaka), Sekitori Senryō Nobori (Sekitori's Thousand Ryo Banner) (August 1767, Takemotoza), and Sekitori Ni Dai no Shobu Zuke (September 1768, Kameya Shibai, Osaka). 相撲の力士に取材した人形浄瑠璃,歌舞伎狂言の一系統。江戸時代の娯楽生活に大きな一画を占める角界と相撲取りをモデルとして,人気俳優に演じさせることは興行政策上にも有利であったところから,多くの相撲狂言が現れた。浄瑠璃では1725年(享保10)1月大坂豊竹座初演の《昔米万石通(むかしごめまんごくどおし)》(西沢一風,田中千柳作)が知られ,これを粉本とした《双蝶々曲輪日記(ふたつちようちようくるわにつき)》(1749年7月大坂竹本座),また《関取千両幟》(1767年8月竹本座),《関取二代勝負附(せきとりにだいのしようぶづけ)》(1768年9月大坂亀谷芝居)などがある。
