…In 1868 (Meiji 1), the company was ordered to handle the financial affairs of the new government, and took charge of them under the name of the Exchange Office Mitsui-gumi. In 1873, the Mitsui-gumi jointly invested with the Ono-gumi (which went bankrupt in 1874) to establish the First National Bank, and in 1874, the company renamed its exchange shop Mitsui-gumi Exchange Bank. In 1976, the company established a private company, the Mitsui Bank, to take over the business. In 1909, it was reorganized as the Mitsui Bank, Ltd., and developed while playing the role of an agency bank for the Mitsui zaibatsu, and gained a firm foothold in the financial market as one of Japan's five major banks. …
