A protochordate of the family Amphioxus of the class Cephalochordate (illustration). When this species was first discovered in England about 200 years ago, it was said to resemble the mollusc slug, and so the name came to be used in Japan as well. It is important as an animal in the transitional process from invertebrates to vertebrates. It is distributed from Sagami Bay to the coast of Kyushu, and inhabits coarse sandy areas with good permeability and little organic matter. During the day, it usually burrows into the sand, with only its mouth above the sand, but at night it comes out onto the sand and can move swiftly over short distances by bending its body from side to side.
