Katsumi Miyake

Western-style painter. Born in Tokushima City. In 1890 (Meiji 23), he entered the art school of Soyama Yukihiko, and after his teacher's death, he studied at Harada Naojiro's Shobikan. In 1897, he went to the United States to study at the Yale School of Art, and after touring Europe, returned to Japan in 1899. After exhibiting at the Meiji Art Association, he became a member of the Hakuba Society. After that, he often went on sketching trips to Europe and the United States. He devoted himself to watercolor painting from an early stage, and is known as one of the pioneers of this field. He also exhibited watercolors at the Bunten Exhibition, and won third prizes at the second and third exhibitions. In 1912, he founded the Kofu-kai with his comrades. In addition to exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne in 1921 (Taisho 13), he became a judge at the Teiten Exhibition and the Shinbunten Exhibition from 1926 onwards, and received the Imperial Prize of the Japan Art Academy in 1951 (Showa 26). His representative works are "Notre Dame after the Rain" and "Mt. Myogi in Joshu."

洋画家。徳島市生まれ。1890年(明治23)曽山幸彦(そやまゆきひこ)の画塾に入り、師の没後原田直次郎の鍾美(しょうび)館に学ぶ。97年渡米してエール大学付属美術学校に学び、ヨーロッパを回って99年に帰国。明治美術会に出品ののち、白馬(はくば)会会員となる。以後しばしば欧米に写生旅行を行った。早くから水彩画に専念し、その先駆者の1人として知られる。文展にも水彩画を出品し、第2回、第3回展で三等賞を受ける。1912年同志と光風会を創立。24年(大正13)サロン・ドートンヌに出品のほか、26年以後帝展、新文展の審査員となり、51年(昭和26)日本芸術院恩賜賞を受けた。代表作は『雨後のノートルダム』『上州妙義山』。
