Wilmington

Japanese: ウィルミントン(英語表記)Wilmington
Wilmington
A port city on the western edge of Delaware, USA. It is located at the confluence of the Christina River and the Delaware River. It is the largest city in the state, and is the center of industry, finance, and commerce. It was first settled by the Swedes in 1638, seized by the Dutch in 1655, and became a British colony in 1664. For the first 100 years it was a small farming village, but the foundations of its development were laid by Quakers who immigrated from Pennsylvania in the 1730s. The surrounding area became fertile farmland, and various factories, including a flour mill using water power, were established along the Christina River. In 1802, E. DuPont established a gunpowder factory, and from the 1830s onwards it rapidly developed into an industrial city. Its main products are automobiles, leather, textiles, steel, and chemical products. It is home to the headquarters of DuPont, a multinational chemical manufacturer, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Haigley Museum. Population 71,529 (1990).
