Sumisaka

Japanese:
Sumisaka
An ancient place name west of Haibara-cho, Nara Prefecture. A place name legend appears in the Jinmu-Sokui Pre-Chronicle in the Nihon Shoki, which says that the name Sumisaka arose from a place where charcoal fires were placed on a key route to prevent the Emperor's army from advancing into the center of Yamato. There is also a story that Emperor Sujin was told in a dream to worship Sumisaka-no-kami with a red shield and spear. During the Jinshin War, it was on Sumisaka that General Otomo Fukei of Tenmu's side was defeated in the Battle of Narayama and encountered reinforcements from Ise.
