A US Navy admiral who played an active role in the Pacific War. Born in Baltimore, Maryland. During the Pacific War, under Admiral Nimitz, he led the carrier task force in the Battle of Midway in 1942, defeating the Japanese task force, and also led the invasion of the Gilbert Islands in 1943, the invasion of the Marshall Islands in 1944, the air raid on the Truk Islands, the invasion of Iwo Jima, the invasion of Okinawa in 1945, and the attack on the Japanese mainland, among other victories. In particular, he commanded battles swiftly and boldly, using a cruiser as his flagship.
