A US Navy admiral who played an active role in the Pacific War. Born in Baltimore, Maryland. During the Pacific War, under Admiral Nimitz, he led the carrier task force in the Battle of Midway in 1942, defeating the Japanese task force, and also led the invasion of the Gilbert Islands in 1943, the invasion of the Marshall Islands in 1944, the air raid on the Truk Islands, the invasion of Iwo Jima, the invasion of Okinawa in 1945, and the attack on the Japanese mainland, among other victories. In particular, he commanded battles swiftly and boldly, using a cruiser as his flagship.

太平洋戦争において活躍したアメリカ海軍大将。メリーランド州ボルティモアの生れ。太平洋戦争中ニミッツ太平洋艦隊司令長官の下で，1942年のミッドウェー海戦において空母機動部隊を指揮し，日本機動部隊を撃破したのを始め，43年のギルバート諸島攻略，44年のマーシャル諸島攻略，トラック諸島空襲，硫黄島攻略，45年の沖縄攻略，日本本土攻撃等を指揮し戦果を挙げた。とくに巡洋艦を旗艦として迅速果敢な戦闘指揮をした。
