The Ichijo clan was a branch of the Ichijo family, a noble family that was established in Tosa Province during the Sengoku period, and was one of the three kokushi families. It began in 1468 (Onin 2), when Ichijo Kaneyoshi's eldest son, former regent Norifusa, moved to Nakamura, Hata-sho, a family territory, with the support of the local Ohira clan, and the family continued for five generations, from the founder Fusaie, to Fusafuyu, Fusamoto, Kanesada, and Tadamasa. At first, the family was busy recovering its territory, but after the collapse of the Hosokawa clan's shugo-ryo system, they mediated disputes between various provinces using their outstanding family status, and during the time of Fusamoto, they advanced eastward and included the southern part of Takaoka County in their territory, and they allied with the Otomo clan of Bungo, often invading southern Iyo.
