Spinel - Spinel (English spelling)

Japanese: スピネル - すぴねる(英語表記)spinel
Spinel - Spinel (English spelling)

The term "spinel" is also used as a synonym. It can refer to the spinel group of minerals in general, or to the single mineral spinel in the narrow sense. To avoid confusion, the latter is called "durite spinel" or "durite spinel". Spinel is found in thermally metamorphosed dolomite, silica-poor clayey sedimentary rocks, ultramafic rocks, and mafic rocks. Its idiomorph is based on a regular octahedron, and it can form repeated twins (spinel twins) based on this base. Famous Japanese production areas include the Kasuga mine (closed) in Ibigawa-cho, Gifu Prefecture, and the Kiura mine (closed) in Ume-cho, Oita Prefecture (now Ume, Saiki City). Transparent spinels can be polished and used as gemstones. Red spinels in particular are used as a ruby substitute. The word derives from the Latin spinella, meaning "little thorn."
