Skeletal muscles are made up of many muscle fibers, i.e., striated muscle cells, but if the number of muscle fibers decreases or the thickness of the muscle fibers decreases, the overall muscle volume decreases. This condition is called muscle atrophy. Since most skeletal muscles are separated from the skin by subcutaneous tissue, which is mainly composed of fat tissue, if there is a large amount of subcutaneous tissue, such muscle atrophy may not be noticeable from the surface of the skin. This is particularly likely to occur in children and women. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
