Gesinde (servant) is a general term for servants and subordinate maids, generally referring to low-ranking indentured servants living in the master's household. Until recently, they were the most common form of employed labor in agricultural management, especially peasant management. Servants are usually unmarried workers, and can be considered transitional labor until they have independent households in the future. Servant Ordinances are official regulations regarding the employment of servants, and have been enacted in various German states since the 15th century. They include provisions for minimum contract periods, official wage amounts, and treatment such as meals, as well as prohibitions on double contracts and breaches of contract.

Gesinde(僕婢)は下僕，下婢の総称であり，一般に主人の家庭内で生活する身分の低い奉公人を指す。最近に至るまで，農業経営とりわけ農民経営の最も一般的な雇用労働力の形態であった。僕婢は通例未婚の労働力であり，将来独立の家計をもつまでの過渡的労働力といえる。僕婢条令は，僕婢雇用に関する公的規制であり，すでに15世紀以来ドイツの諸領邦で制定されている。内容は，契約期間の最低限度，公定の給与額，食事などの待遇などの規定や，二重契約や契約違反の禁止である。
