Stone circle

Japanese: ストーン･サークル（英語表記）stone circle

A type of megalithic monument. It is translated as a stone circle or a stone henge. It is a ring made of natural pillar-shaped stones lined up in a row, and is distinguished from a linear stone circle (alignment). It often has two or three concentric circles. They vary in size, with the largest stones weighing up to 20 tons, and rings ranging in diameter from large ones over 50 meters to small ones less than 2 meters. To distinguish them, the Welsh name cromlech is sometimes used, and those that are connected by lintel stones placed on top of the standing stones are called henges.

巨石記念物の一種。環状列石あるいは環状石籬（せきり）と訳される。柱状の自然石を立て並べて環形としたもので，直線状の列石(アリニュマン)とは区別される。同心円状に二重，三重にめぐることも多い。その大きさはいろいろで，最大の石は20tにも及び，環の径は50m以上の大型のものから2mに満たない小型のものまでがある。ウェールズ語の呼称クロムレックcromlechを採用したり，立石の上に楣（まぐさ）石を置いて相互に連結したものをヘンジhengeと呼んで特に区別することがある。
