French philosopher and theosophist. He is a representative figure of the so-called Illuminisme, a major current of mystical thought in the late 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment. He began his life as a thinker when he joined the Martinez de Pascali cult, and the success of his first work, Error and Truth (1775), led him to enter high society and gain many supporters both in France and abroad. He later published most of his books, including Man Impelled by Desire (1790) and The Mission of the Spiritual Man (1802), under the name of "The Unknown Philosopher."

フランスの哲学者，神智学者。啓蒙の世紀，18世紀後半における神秘思想の一大潮流，いわゆるイリュミニスムilluminismeを代表する人物。マルティネス･ド･パスカリの教団への加入を契機に思想家としての生涯を歩みはじめ，処女作《誤謬と真理》(1775)の成功により社交界に出入りして，フランス内外に多くの支持者を得た。その後《望みに駆られた人》(1790)，《霊人の使命》(1802)ほか，ほとんどの著書を〈無名の哲学者〉の名の下に発表。
