A representative rock-cut temple in Maharashtra, western India. It is especially famous along with the Ajanta Caves. Located several tens of kilometers northwest of Aurangabad, a total of 34 rock-cut caves are lined up over a total length of over 2 km at the foot of a rocky mountain facing west. Counting from the south, caves 1 to 12 are Buddhist caves built around the 7th century. Only cave 10 is a chaitya (prayer hall, shrine), the others are viharas (monk's halls), and caves 11 and 12 are three-storey. Caves 13 to 29 are Hindu caves built around the 8th century. They are generally large in scale, and many of them are excellent works of architecture and sculpture. Kailasanatha Temple, cave 16, located in the center, was carved entirely out of natural rock and is magnificent in scale. Caves 30 to 34 are Jain caves built around the 8th to 10th centuries. Most of the caves are relatively small in scale, but the ceiling paintings on the upper floors of caves 32 and 33 remain, and are noted as examples of the painting style inherited from the Ajanta Caves. In 1983, it was registered as a World Heritage Site. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
