An extinct language belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. It was spoken until the 1st century, mainly in the Samnium region of southern Italy, but was completely replaced by Latin by the end of the 1st century. It is known from about 250 inscriptions dating from the 5th century BC to the 1st century AD. The inscriptions are written in Roman, Greek, and a unique script derived from the Etruscan alphabet. It is closely related to Umbrian and is grouped together with the Osco-Umbrian languages.

インド＝ヨーロッパ語族のイタリック語派に属する死語。イタリア南部のサムニウム地方を中心として，1世紀まで行われていたが，1世紀の終りには完全にラテン語に取って代られた。前5世紀から後1世紀にわたる 250ほどの碑文によって知られている。碑文は，ローマ字，ギリシア文字，エトルリア文字から派生した特有の文字などで書かれている。ウンブリア語と近い関係にあり，オスク＝ウンブリア諸語としてまとめられる。
