A river in southeastern South America. Its total length is 3,830 km. It originates in the plateau in southeastern Brazil, merges with the Grande River and the Paranaiba River, and forms the border between Brazil and Paraguay, and between Paraguay and Argentina. It then merges with the Paraguay River near Corrientes and flows south. It then merges with the Uruguay River upstream of Buenos Aires and changes its name to the La Plata River. The Itaipu Dam, jointly developed by Brazil and Paraguay, is one of the largest in the world. The Iguazu Falls on the Iguazu River, a tributary of the river, are world famous.

南米南東部の川。全長3830km。ブラジル南東部の高原に発し，グランデ川，パラナイバ川と合流してブラジルとパラグアイ，パラグアイとアルゼンチンの国境をなし，コリエンテス付近でパラグアイ川と合流して南下。さらにブエノス・アイレスの上流でウルグアイ川と合流してラ・プラタ川と名を変える。ブラジルとパラグアイによって共同開発されたイタイプ・ダムは世界最大級。支流のイグアス川にかかるイグアス滝は世界的に有名。
