Postural drainage method (English spelling)

Japanese: 体位排痰法 - たいいはいたんほう（英語表記）postural drainage

A treatment for respiratory diseases in which the patient is positioned so that the bronchi containing phlegm are higher than the head, and gravity is used to encourage the expulsion of phlegm. Also called postural drainage, this treatment is used for diseases involving a lot of phlegm, such as bronchiectasis and chronic bronchitis. Since phlegm usually tends to accumulate in the bronchi on the lower back, in order to expel phlegm, the patient often lies on his/her stomach with a pillow under his/her stomach, with the waist elevated and the head lowered, but if the affected area is known, the patient should be positioned so that the affected area is on top.

痰のたまった気管支が頭部より高い位置になるような体位をとり，重力によって痰の排出を促す呼吸器疾患の治療法。体位ドレナージともいわれ，気管支拡張症や慢性気管支炎など痰の多い病気で行われる。通常，痰は下部背中側の気管支にたまりやすいので，痰の排出にあたっては，腹の下にまくらなどを置いて腹ばいになり，腰が高く頭が低く下がるような姿勢をとることが多いが，病変部位がわかっている場合には，そこが上になるような姿勢をとる。
