Pronoia (English spelling)

Japanese: プロノイア（英語表記）pronoia

A Greek word meaning "providence." It is a concept linked to the idea of a rational God, and is also found in Plato, but appears in a prominent form in Stoic natural sciences. The universe is one large living organism governed by God as a rational soul, and the causes of the creation and destruction of natural entities, which at first glance appear to be accidental, are in fact connected by the rational providence and perfect wisdom of an immanent God who forms everything purposefully, and therefore the whole and parts of natural entities are also closely connected. This idea was mainly inherited by Neoplatonism.

「摂理」の意のギリシア語。理性的な神の観念と連関した概念で，プラトンにもみられるが，顕著な形で現れるのはストア派の自然学においてである。宇宙は理性的な霊魂としての神によって支配されている一つの大きな生物体であり，一見偶然であるかにみえる自然的存在の生成消滅の諸原因は，実はすべてを合目的的に形成する内在的な神の理性的な摂理，完全な知恵によって連関しており，自然的存在の全体と諸部分もそれゆえ密接に連関している。この観念は主として新プラトン主義に継承された。
