A structure whose main framework is made of reinforced concrete is called reinforced concrete construction, and a building made of reinforced concrete is called a reinforced concrete building. It is also called RC building.

Concrete had been used as a building material in ancient Rome and other places, but it was not until the mid-19th century that reinforced concrete began to be used in construction. J. Monnier of France, who received patents for reinforced concrete flower pots and railway sleepers, constructed a prototype of an earthquake-resistant house made of reinforced concrete in 1880.

主要骨組みを鉄筋コンクリートで構成する構造を鉄筋コンクリート造reinforced concrete constructionといい，鉄筋コンクリート造による建築を鉄筋コンクリート造建築と呼ぶ。RC造建築ともいう。
［歴史］
　コンクリートは建築材料として古代ローマなどでも用いられていたが，鉄筋コンクリートが建築に用いられるようになったのは19世紀中ごろからで，鉄筋を入れたコンクリート製植木鉢や，鉄道まくら木で特許を得たフランスのJ.モニエは，1880年には鉄筋コンクリート造耐震家屋を試作した。
