British playwright. Born in Czechoslovakia. He rose to fame with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1967). Based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, this play is an absurdist drama that turns the world of the original inside out, with two of Hamlet's schoolmates, who only have minor roles in the original, as protagonists. The title is taken from a line spoken by the British ambassador at the climax of the original. Since this play, he has produced a series of works full of references to existing plays and literature, including The Real Inspector Hound (1968), The Leapers (1972), Farce (1974), and The Real Thing (1982).

イギリスの劇作家。チェコスロバキア生れ。《ローゼンクランツとギルデンスターンは死んだ》(1967)によって一躍名声を得た。この劇は，シェークスピアの《ハムレット》をもとに，原作では端役にすぎないハムレットの2人の学友を主人公に据え，原作の世界を裏返しにした不条理劇である。題名は，原作の大詰めでイギリスからの大使が語るせりふの一節からとられている。この劇以後，《本当のハウンド警部》(1968)，《跳躍者たち》(1972)，《茶番劇》(1974)，《ほんもの》(1982)など，既存の劇や文学への言及に富む作品を続々と発表した。
