1937‐ British playwright. Born in Czechoslovakia. He rose to fame with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1967). Based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, this play is an absurdist drama that turns the world of the original inside out, with two of Hamlet's schoolmates, who only have minor roles in the original, as protagonists. The title is taken from a line spoken by the British ambassador at the climax of the original. Since this play, he has produced a series of works full of references to existing plays and literature, including The Real Inspector Hound (1968), The Leapers (1972), Farce (1974), and The Real Thing (1982).
