A port city located at the midpoint of the Suez Canal in Egypt. Population 255,134 (1996). The French-style city area spreads out on the west shore of Lake Timsah, and the lake is connected to the Nile by the Ismailia Canal. There are rail and road connections to Port Said, Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez. The city was heavily damaged in the Six-Day War (the Third Arab-Israeli War) in 1967. Currently, it is the headquarters for controlling ships navigating the Suez Canal, and is also a distribution center for oil and agricultural products. It was built in 1863 by Lesseps' Suez Canal Company as a base for digging the canal. The name Ismailia comes from Ismail, the viceroy of Egypt.
