A volcano that straddles Yaita City, Nasushiobara City, Shioya Town, Shioya County, and Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture, sandwiched between the Kinu River and the Houki River. Takahara Mountain is a composite volcano of two stratovolcanoes: Shiobara Volcano, consisting of Maeguroyama (1,678 meters) and Myojindake in the north, and Shakagatake Volcano, consisting of Keichoyama (1,765 meters) and Shakagatake (1,795 meters) in the south. In the early stages, it emitted basalt, and in the later stages, dacite and pumice, as seen in the parasitic volcano Mount Fuji. The explosion crater that opens to the east becomes the Sukkansawa crater rapids and the Kanomata River, which flow north and join the Houki River. It is part of Nikko National Park, and Shiobara Onsen on the northern foot of the mountain is a base for sightseeing. The area is also blessed with great hiking spots, such as the beautiful valley along the Hoki River, Happogahara, the Prefectural Forest on the southeastern slope, and the nature trail that goes around Lake Onuma.
