A deep-sea fish of the Salmoniformes order, family Carassius. It is called the Carassius because its eyes protrude forward in a cylindrical shape. Its body is long and slender, cylindrical, with the lower half of its tail fin significantly elongated. Its body is silvery and scaleless. Its huge mouth extends to just below the pectoral fin. It has large, sharp teeth in both jaws, and can swallow whole fish up to twice its size. Its dorsal fin is located on the posterior half of its body, and its anal fin is small and located below the rear end of the dorsal fin. サケ目ボウエンギョ科の深海魚。眼が円筒状に前方へ突出しているのでボウエンギョと呼ばれる。体は細長く円筒形で尾びれの下半分が著しく延長する。体は銀色でうろこがない。口は巨大で胸びれ直下まで裂けている。両あごに鋭い大きな歯をもち,自分より2倍も大きい魚を丸のみにできる。背びれは体の後半部に位置し,しりびれは小さく背びれ後端の下に位置する。胸びれは著しく高い位置にあり大きく,うちわ状に上方に向かって開く。
