This is a system that exists when a weaker country submits to the protection of a stronger country by transferring a significant part of its sovereignty, and while the stronger country is called a protectorate and remains a sovereign state, the weaker country is called a protectee country and becomes a semi-sovereign state. The treaty that establishes this relationship is called a protectorate treaty. However, since the protectee country does not become part of the protectorate, it does not automatically become a party to the war if the protectorate starts a war with a third country. Furthermore, it is not automatically bound by treaties that the protectorate concludes with third countries. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
