...If there are no rock corners to serve as anchors for securing, such as handholds or footholds, a piton is hammered into a crack in the rock, a carabiner is attached to it, and a rope is passed through it to climb. In rocks without cracks, a recessed bolt is used, and stirrups are used on overhangs (rocks that jut out like eaves) with no footholds. In places where there are few handholds and securing is difficult, further equipment such as a jumar (self-hoisting device) and a pulley is used.
