Italian painter and theorist of the early Baroque. His real name was Domenico Zampieri. He was born in Bologna. He first studied under Calvert, then at the Academy of Lodovico Carracci. In 1602 he went to Rome and worked under Annibale Carracci on the decoration of Palazzo Farnese. He was mainly active in Rome, and his major works include "Saint Jerome" (1614, Vatican Museums), "Diana's Hunt" (1617, Borghese Gallery, Rome), and the mural decoration of the Basilica of Sant'Andrea delle Valle (1624-28). In 1631 he went to Naples, where he created the murals and altarpiece for the Chapel of San Gennaro, and died there. He left behind many religious paintings as well as historical and landscape paintings, which show a tendency towards tranquil and refined classicism. His landscape paintings influenced Poussin and other painters of his time, and he played an important role in conveying the classical Baroque style of Annibale Carracci to the 17th century. He is one of the leading Bolognese Eclectic painters, along with Guido Reni.
