A missionary and saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. As a result of the Mongol invasion (Tatar yoke), the Orthodox Church shifted its main focus to the north and focused on evangelizing to other ethnic groups, with Stephen being a prime example of this. Stephen began his missionary work to the Komi people, a Finno-Ugric ethnic group, in 1379. He first invented the Komi alphabet and translated church documents into Komi. As a result of his missionary work, a bishopric was established in Perm, and he became its first bishop in 1383. [Moriasu Tatsuya]

ロシア正教会の宣教師，聖人。モンゴル人の侵入(タタールのくびき)の結果，主力を北方に移すことになった正教会は，異民族への布教に力を入れたが，その代表者がステファンである。ステファンは1379年よりフィン･ウゴル語系民族のコミ人への宣教を行った。まずコミ語のアルファベットを考案し，教会文献をコミ語に翻訳した。宣教の成果により，ペルミに主教座が開かれ，83年初代主教に就任した。【森安達也】
