Around 1345-96 A missionary and saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. As a result of the Mongol invasion (Tatar yoke), the Orthodox Church shifted its main focus to the north and focused on evangelizing to other ethnic groups, with Stephen being a prime example of this. Stephen began his missionary work to the Komi people, a Finno-Ugric ethnic group, in 1379. He first invented the Komi alphabet and translated church documents into Komi.
