Greed - Gurido (English spelling)

American film. 1924. Directed by Erich von Stroheim. Released in Japan in 1926 (Taisho 15). Stroheim himself wrote the screenplay, based on the novel McTeigue (1899) by Frank Norris. McTeigue (Gibson Gowland), who worked in a coal mine, apprenticed as a traveling dentist, went to the city and opened a dental practice without a license, met Trina (Zas Pitts) and married her. However, Trina turned miserly, their marriage fell apart, and McTeigue, who had killed his wife, faced death in the desert. This is a representative work by Stroheim, who showed his unique talent in The Foolish Wife (1921), and is considered one of the masterpieces of silent film. It is a tragedy that confronts the despicable "greed" of the common people, and vividly depicts the ugliness of human nature and desire. However, because the film has 42 volumes and a running time of 9.5 hours, a shortened version of 10 volumes and just over 2 hours was released to the public. The depiction is not entirely realist as is commonly believed, but rather uses techniques such as exaggeration, humor, symbolism, and surrealism, giving the film a rich depiction.
