Anche - Anche

[Gender, status and size]
In Korea, where Confucian ethics are the basis for a strict distinction between men and women, this is reflected in the use of space in buildings, with a distinction between men's and women's spaces. The basic form is seen in the distinction between the inner room and the sarangbao, but this distinction becomes clearer as the house becomes larger, with the building being divided into a sarang (sarangchae), used by men, and a building (anch'ae), used by women. When the buildings themselves are differentiated in this way, the sarangchae is placed near the main gate on the front side of the house, and the anch'ae behind it, in a position that cannot be seen from the front.
