A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). It is covered with white pubescent hairs. The culm is clumpy and 40-90 cm tall. From August to October, it produces a raceme of 3-5 florets. The spikelets are on one side of the florets, are broadly elliptical, about 2.5 mm long, and contain two florets. The first glume is degenerate, while the second glume is hemispherically swollen. It grows in grasslands and is distributed from Honshu to Okinawa, Ogasawara, the Korean peninsula, and mainland China. It is named after the fact that it resembles barnyard millet, which is also a member of the Poaceae family, but its spikelets are smaller. It is distinguished as a different species, barnyard millet, when the leaves are hairless and the spikelets are densely attached to the florets.
