Stegodon (English spelling)

Japanese: ステゴドン（英語表記）Stegodon

A large fossil elephant of the Stegodontidae family of the Proboscidea order. It is characterized by its molars with low, roof-shaped ridges. It is intermediate between mastodons and Elephas, and is in a transitional stage from diphyodonts to odontodonts, but seems to have evolved in parallel with Elephas. It is distributed in strata from the Pliocene of the Neogene and the middle Pleistocene of the Quaternary from East Asia to Africa. The Akashi elephant, Chinese elephant, Sugiyama elephant, and Toyo elephant excavated in Japan belong to this species.

長鼻目ステゴドン科の大型化石ゾウ。屋根型の低い稜をもつ臼歯を特徴とする。マストドンとエレファスの中間に位置し，二生歯性から一生歯性への過渡的段階にあるが，エレファスと平行して進化したもののようである。東アジアからアフリカの新第三紀鮮新世，第四紀更新世中期の地層に分布する。日本で発掘されたアカシゾウ，シナゾウ，スギヤマゾウ，トウヨウゾウなどがこれに属する。
