A city on the Nobi Plain in western Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1947. The city center used to be a river port, and later developed as a town in front of the gates of Tsushima Shrine. In the early modern period, it was a cotton textile production area, which switched to wool textiles after the Meiji period, and is now one of the centers of the Bisai wool textile industrial area. In 1985, the textile industry accounted for about 40% of the city's manufactured goods shipment value, but by 2003 this had fallen to about 10%, while the transportation equipment and metal industries grew and now account for about 30%. Urban agriculture, such as greenhouse vegetable cultivation of strawberries, tomatoes, and flowers, is practiced. Both the Meitetsu Tsushima and Bisai lines run through the city. 25.09 km2 . Population 65,258 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
