A general term for an aerophone instrument made of several tubes of different lengths bound together or arranged and fixed in the shape of a raft. The tubes are usually closed, but some are open. They are made from materials such as reed, bamboo, wood, clay, or metal, and the end that becomes the mouthpiece may be carved with a cut edge. Sound is produced by blowing into this end. Different pitches can be obtained by changing the tube that is blown into. This type of instrument can be found in various places, including the Chinese xiao, Europe, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and South America. The name in European languages comes from the flute of Pan, the half-god in Greek mythology.
