Stevenson
British engineer who built the world's first practical steam locomotive. Born into a coal miner's family, he initially worked in coal mines, but in 1814, at the request of a coal mine owner, he built the steam locomotive Blücher for use in the mines. He continued to work on improvements, and in 1823 he established a locomotive works, where he completed the Locomotion, and in 1825 opened the world's first passenger railway between Stockton and Darlington. In 1829, he won a steam locomotive race with the Rocket, which was held prior to the opening of the Liverpool-Manchester railway in 1830, establishing the practicality of steam locomotives. He later led railway construction in Britain, Belgium, Spain and other countries. He was the first president of the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers, founded in 1847.

Stevenson

British engineer. Son of G. Stephenson, who opened the world's first passenger railway. In 1825 he assisted his father in the construction of the Stockton-Darlington section, and from 1833 to 1838 he led the construction of the London-Birmingham section, contributing greatly to the development of railways. He later designed and built railways and railway bridges in Britain and other countries, and was particularly active as a leader in bridge engineering, building the Britannia Bridge across the Menai Strait in 1850 and the Great Victoria Bridge across the St. Lawrence River in Montreal, Canada in 1859.

Stevenson

British author. Born in Edinburgh. He loved traveling and wrote travelogues such as "Traveling with a Donkey" (1879), but died of an illness on the island of Samoa. His novels include "Treasure Island" (1883), "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1886), and "Kidnapped" (1886). He is also known for his collection of short stories "New Arabian Nights" (1882), his collection of poems "The Garden of Children's Songs" (1885), and his critical essay "On Men and Books" (1882), which also deals with Yoshida Shoin.

スティーブンソン

スティーブンソン

英国の作家。エディンバラに生まれる。旅を愛し,紀行文《旅はロバを連れて》(1879年)などを書いたが,サモア島で病死。小説に《宝島》(1883年),《ジキル博士とハイド氏》(1886年),《誘拐されて》(1886年)など。短編集《新アラビアン・ナイト》(1882年),詩集《童謡の花園》(1885年),また吉田松陰をも扱った評論《人と書物について》(1882年)も知られる。
