A northern nomadic people who have lived widely in western and northwestern China (Qinghai, Gansu) since ancient times. Historically, they have had a close relationship with the Di. The character Qiang (qiang) already appears in the oracle bones of the Shang dynasty, and one theory is that it was sacrificed in the rituals of the Shang kings and other Shang people (especially ancestral rituals). Qiang (archaic pronunciation: Kiang) is a compound character of sheep and man, meaning a shepherd, and its sound is thought to be related to the archaic pronunciation of giang for sheep. 古代より中国の西部･北西部(青海，甘粛)に広く居住した北方系の遊牧民族。歴史上，氐（てい）と密接な関係をもつ。羌（きよう）という文字は，すでに殷代の甲骨文にもあらわれており，一説によると殷王をはじめ殷人の祭祀(とくに祖先祭祀)において犠牲とされたという。羌(古音Kiang)は羊と人の会意文字で牧羊の人の意であり，その音は羊の古音giangに関連したものと考えられている。実際，チャン族は羊を最も神聖視し，それを主要家畜としている。
